Switching from Lead Forensics: notice dates, data and a checklist
This guide is general information, not legal advice. Your contract is the document that counts. Scout is not affiliated with Lead Forensics.
To switch from Lead Forensics smoothly, find your renewal date, send written notice at least 90 days before it, and run your replacement alongside Lead Forensics during the notice period. Before your access ends, export the data you want to keep. The dates matter most, because Lead Forensics' standard contract renews automatically if notice isn't given in time.
Step 1: Find your contract end date
Your contract end date is in your Commercial Terms, the part of your contract specific to you. Lead Forensics' Master Service Agreement (MSA) says the initial term is "as stated in the Commercial Terms".1
Look for:
- the start date of billable services;
- the initial term (for example 12 or 24 months);
- whether the contract has already renewed. Under the standard MSA, it renews "for successive periods each of a duration equal to the Initial Term".1
If you can't find your Commercial Terms, ask your Lead Forensics account manager for a copy, in writing. Your finance team may also have the first invoice, which helps confirm the start date.
Step 2: Work out your notice date
Under the standard MSA, you must give at least 90 days' prior written notice before the end of the current term.1 Count back 90 days from your term end date. Your notice needs to arrive before that date, not on it.
Worked example. If your current term ends on 31 March 2027, 90 days before that is 31 December 2026. Written notice would need to be received by then. Because of bank holidays and office closures, you would be wise to send it in early December.
Some practical points:
- Count carefully. How days are counted can depend on your contract's wording. Give yourself a margin of a few weeks.
- Put it in writing. The MSA refers to written notice.1 Check your contract for how notices must be sent (for example, email or post, and to which address).
- Keep proof. Save a copy of the notice and any acknowledgement. Ask for written confirmation of the end date.
- Watch the anniversary. The MSA includes "an annual 10% fee increase" at each 12-month anniversary.1 If your term is longer than a year, an increase may apply before your term ends.
If you are not sure whether you can still give notice for this term, speak to Lead Forensics promptly and take advice on your own contract.
Step 3: Plan the overlap
Run your replacement alongside Lead Forensics for at least two weeks before the end date. You'll see how the two compare on the same traffic, and your team won't have a gap in data.
Both scripts can sit on the same site. Set up the new tool during your notice period, not on the day Lead Forensics stops. With Scout:
- Start a 14-day free trial. You don't need a card.
- Paste the Scout snippet into your site's
<head>, or add it through Google Tag Manager. - Connect Google Analytics 4 and Search Console if you use them.
- Update your privacy notice to mention the new tool. Our guide to visitor identification and GDPR explains what to include.
If you want more than the 14-day trial for your comparison, time the trial to start about two weeks before your Lead Forensics access ends, or choose a monthly plan. Monthly plans can be cancelled in your billing settings and run to the end of the paid month.
Step 4: Compare like with like
Compare the two tools over the same dates and the same pages. Judge them on the companies that matter to you, not on the size of the list.
Useful checks:
- Known visitors. Pick a handful of companies you know visited (customers who logged in, prospects you were emailing) and see which tool found them.
- Target accounts. How many of your target accounts did each tool identify?
- Quality of matches. How many matches look like real prospects, and how many are internet providers, cloud hosts or unlikely names? Scout gives each match a confidence score and flags broadband, mobile and VPN traffic, so you can see which matches to trust.
- Workflow. Do alerts, CRM sync and contact look-ups fit how your team works?
Be fair to both tools. Lead Forensics has been identifying UK business traffic for many years. In some sectors its coverage may be wider than a newer product's, and your comparison should show that honestly.
Step 5: Keep your data
Before your Lead Forensics access ends, export anything you want to keep, such as visit history, lead lists and notes. Once access stops, you may not be able to get it back.
- Ask your account manager which exports are available, and in what format.
- Check whether visits and leads already sync to your CRM. If so, much of the history may already be kept there.
- Export saved lists and target-account lists so you can recreate them in your new tool.
- Download any reports you use in board or pipeline reporting.
Keep exported data only as long as you need it, and store it securely, because it may include personal data such as contact names.
Step 6: Tidy up
When the Lead Forensics term ends, remove its tracking script from your site and update your privacy notice. Leaving an unused script running still collects data, and your privacy notice should list only the tools you use.
- Remove the Lead Forensics script from your site and tag manager.
- Update your privacy notice and cookie or consent settings.
- Disconnect the Lead Forensics CRM integration, if you had one.
- Tell your sales team where to find alerts and data from now on.
